We offer a variety of Residential Programs. Because we are an established organization, we have the ability to offer flexibility and a wide range of service delivery. Considerations in assisting families in determining which programs best suit their needs are: their preference, needs, staffing patterns, availability, budget and transportation requirements.

The Independent Living program is our residential program offering up to 15 hours assistance per month. In most instances, the persons served in Independent Living live in their own homes or apartments, are employed and use public transportation. Sheltered Living Independent Living advisors assist with teaching skills such as grocery shopping, cooking, money management and also arrange and accompany the persons served to doctor appointments.

Sheltered Living, Inc. operates five group homes. Three are HUD homes and 2 are privately owned. Persons served live in each home with a night house manager that resides on the premises or there is around-the-clock awake staff determined by the needs of the residents. Additional staff work assigned hours. Persons who live in these homes usually like the “family” atmosphere offered by the opportunity to do things together and share in daily chores. Each group home has a large wheelchair accessible van.

Supported Living services usually entail 2 people who share an apartment and live in close proximity to 1 or 2 other apartments that are also shared by people served by Sheltered Living. Staff work with the residents – rotating between apartments and 1 staff person is on-site at night. In some cases, staff may share an apartment with a resident. This arrangement works well for persons served who desire a quieter environment and also those who have gained some independent living skills. Supported living also includes homes for 2 to 4 clients. Supported living groups usually have a minivan assigned to their location. In some instances, they may have a wheelchair accessible van depending upon need.

Our fragile clients who require significant support usually choose the Assisted Living Program. Housing arrangements may include living in one of our group homes that is designated for retired residents or it could be an apartment or house. There is a heavy staffing pattern and around the clock awake staff.
We also have special programs for our retirement age group. One group home is designated as a retirement home and several smaller homes are also designed to meet the needs of persons served who are not as active and also need specific supports.
People with disabilities are living longer and are healthier than previous generations. As in the general population, there is going to be an enormous increase in Baby Boomers and we are proactively working to design a wrap around program encompassing residential and day supports.
